On 26 April 1986, in the nuclear reactor of unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, there was an explosion and a fire that could not be extinguished for 9 days. An unprecedented amount of radioactive dust was released into the atmosphere.
During the rescue operation the town of Pripyat, which at that time had 50 thousand inhabitants, was evacuated. 9 percent of the area of the then Ukraine was contaminated. 600 thousand people were exposed to an increased radiation dose of 1 mSv.
Thanks to the heroes who sacrificed their lives or health by fighting the reactor fire and then protecting the radioactive material after the explosion, a natural disaster was avoided, saving many human lives.
